What causes them and what can you do?

  • Varicose veins are enlarged, swollen veins that are raised above the surface of the skin. Spider veins are similar, but smaller and not raised above the skin.
  • The direct cause is a condition called venous insufficiency. Valves in the veins become weak and allow blood to pool in the vein. 
  • The underlying causes can include heredity (family history), age, prolonged standing, exposure to the sun, hormone changes or weight gain.

In addition to the unsightly visual appearance of varicose veins, the condition can be quite painful. Delaying treatment can also lead to more serious complications, including inflammation, blood clots, skin ulcers, bleeding and deep vein thrombosis.
