What Is Microphlebectomy?
A microphlebectomy is an outpatient surgery that involves making tiny, slit-like skin incisions to remove varicose veins. This procedure is used to remove sections of a superficial vein that has swelled and bulged from the surface of the leg. There are some cases where microphlebectomy only is recommended.
Sutures and general anesthesia are not needed for this minimally invasive procedure. Microphlebectomy is completed in our office under local anesthesia. You are able to return home shortly after the procedure, which requires less than an hour to complete.
However, due to the use of local anesthesia during the treatment, you can feel some tingling and numbness where the veins are removed. After your procedure, you should make arrangements for a driver to take you home.
For one to two weeks following your treatment, you should refrain from doing anything physically demanding. You will need to wear bandages or compression socks for a few days or weeks after the treatment to avoid blood clots.
Benefits of Microphlebectomy
Microphlebectomy is less intrusive than surgical stripping since it only removes the big surface varicose veins, which leads to better cosmetic outcomes, faster healing, and less pain. After a microphlebectomy, most patients do not need to stop their routine activities, and recovery is quicker. Ablation and microphlebectomy may be performed simultaneously.
Surgical Removal of Varicose Veins in Boulder for Lasting Relief
A local anesthetic is injected into the leg to numb the area. Small incisions are made in the skin above the affected vein. Using a special vein hook, the vein is lifted through the incision and removed. During the procedure, the patient may feel a tugging sensation but should not experience severe pain.
If combined with EVLT, the microphlebectomy portion is done after the ablation. After the vein section is removed, the incision is closed with Steri-Strips and compressed with an ACE bandage or compression stockings.
